Highly Recommended Actions

Identify and support programs targeted to at-risk youth that are found to have a lower suicide rate than the Florida average for that demographic group.

Partner with state agencies to educate and train not only the personnel but the populations they serve.

Identify a network of trainers around the state who can train various populations about suicide prevention in a variety of settings.

Other Recommended Actions

Implement evidence-based transition to independence programs for youth and young adults to enable youth with emotional and behavioral difficulties to become independent and fully  functioning adults.

Peer programs for all-age students and seniors.

Develop a program for dealing with depression in the workplace including staff wellness programs.

Ask the Department of Elder Affairs to resume the gatekeeper program again.

Utilize certified peer specialists.

Develop a state-wide suicide prevention program for first responders that includes an anonymous crisis center line.

Have youth who have attempted suicide and are mentally together to help with peer groups in the schools.

When someone loses a spouse or partner, have trained therapists in local hospitals to run support groups.

Gay Straight Alliances in schools run by faculty to give support, having a rap group, to stop feelings of isolation and depression.

These actions were identified as a result of a collaborative effort between the Florida Statewide Office of Suicide Prevention, the Florida Suicide Prevention Coordinating Council, and the Florida Suicide Prevention Coalition representing stakeholders throughout Florida, and in conjunction with FMHI/USF.
